Overview

In Thailand, a wedding traditionally has two distinct parts: the ceremonial wedding — a cultural and religious celebration that requires no documentation — and the legal registration, which creates an official, legally binding marriage record.

Legal registration is performed at the local government office (Amphur or district office). The resulting certificate is issued in Thai. Our firm provides full assistance navigating the process, particularly for international couples who may be unfamiliar with Thai legal requirements.

Eligibility Requirements

Both parties must satisfy all of the following conditions:

  • Minimum age of 17 years old (or with a court order for younger parties).
  • Neither party is legally insane or mentally incapacitated.
  • No direct blood relation between the parties.
  • No shared adoptive parents.
  • Neither party is currently married to another person.

Waiting Period Rules

For widows and divorcees, remarriage is permitted only after a 310-day waiting period from the end of the previous marriage.

Exceptions to the waiting period:

  • A child is born during the waiting period.
  • A court order expressly permits remarriage.
  • A medical certificate confirms non-pregnancy.
  • Remarriage to the same former spouse.
